The control system performs an initial control operation in which a given speed is kept constant until a preset minimum distance is reached by own vehicle with respect to a preceding vehicle. A speed control operation is performed such that the distance between own and preceding vehicles is controlled, when the distance between the own vehicle and preceding vehicle reduces below minimum value. Arbitrary actuation of brake pedal (P) in own vehicle is enabled in a defined manner and control mode of the own vehicle is switched.
