[Also in Group XXXVI] An induction heating coil which can be opened and placed round, for example, the ends of two abutting pipe sections which are to be heated comprises a first set of conductor terminals, a second set of conductor terminals each set having an interior manifold cooling fluid chamber, a plurality of at least partially flexible hollow insulated conductors each joining a terminal of one set to a terminal of the other set to form a continuous helical current path and each communicating with the manifold chambers. As shown, a latching and contact mechanism 10 for releasably electrically connecting the two sets of terminals is in two halves 12 and 14. The portion 12 comprises insulated bolts 24 which hold together end blocks 15 and a plurality of mutually insulated conductor blocks 16 having male contact terminals 18 and internal cavities 31, Fig. 4 (not shown), forming a single elongated manifold chamber 32 with an inlet port 34. The portion 14 includes end blocks 19 and a plurality of conductor blocks 20 having female socket terminals 22 receiving the male contact terminals 18 and formed with cavities defining a manifold chamber 33 with an outlet 36. Convolutions 38 of the coil are formed of asbestos insulated stiff hollow copper tubes held in parallel relationship by four clamps 52 and provided at their middle portions with a short length 40 of flexible hollow conductor cable. One end of each convolution is secured to a block 16 and the other to a block 20, the connections being to alternate blocks to provide the required helical current path. The toggle latch mechanism for opening and closing the coil includes a pair of upstanding lugs 42 secured to the portion 14 and each provided with a notch 43 receiving the free end of one closed link 44 which is pivotally secured at 45 in a handle plate 46 rotatably secured to the portion 12 on one of a pair of upstanding lugs 48. The handle plates are joined by a bar 49 whereby both plates can be operated at the same time. The current path extends from the cooling fluid inlet port 34 to the outlet port 36.
