Amides of the general formula <FORM:0683435/IV (b)/1> (wherein Y represents hydrogen or a nitro group, R1, R2 and R3 represent alkyl groups, and n is 1 or 2) are manufactured by heating the corresponding acid or mixing the chloride thereof with a dialkylamine, the free hydroxy group being, if desired, protected by esterification and the protecting group subsequently removed by saponification. The yield may be increased by the addition of substances which bind water and hydrogen halide, and working up can be facilitated by the addition of inert diluents. In examples: (1) acetylsyringic acid chloride is allowed to stand with diethylamine in benzene, the acetyl group being subsequently removed by saponification; (2) vanillic acid is refluxed with diethylamine in xylene in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide and glass powder; (3) carbethoxyvanillic acid chloride is refluxed with dimethylamine hydrochloride in benzene, and the product is saponified by shaking with dilute caustic soda; (4) 5-nitrovanillic acid is acetylated with acetic anhydride in ether, the product is heated with thionyl chloride, and the resulting acid chloride is reacted with diethylamine in benzene, the acetyl group being finally removed by saponification. Specification 403,892 is referred to.
|
