An organic electroluminescent element of the present invention is provided with an organic compound layer between a pair of electrodes. The organic electroluminescent element is characterized in that: the organic compound layer has a plurality of light emitting layers, including a first light emitting layer and a second light emitting layer; the first light emitting layer and/or the second light emitting layer contains a phosphorescence emitting dopant material; a space layer is provided between the first light emitting layer and the second light emitting layer; and that the space layer contains a compound wherein a difference (?ST) between singlet energy (EgS) and an energy gap (Eg77K) at 77 [K] satisfies the relationship expressed by the following formula (1).
