<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide xeno-free, human or animal-component-free, synthetic, chemically defined compounds that mimic human fibronectin-coated surfaces; and to provide surfaces modified therewith. <P>SOLUTION: The compounds include at least two regions of a fibronectin cell-binding domain joined by a flexible linker. The regions interact with one another in a manner that mimics one or more functional characteristics of fibronectin.
