<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antiferroelectric liquid crystal element which can be switched from a transmission state to a cutoff state at a high speed without depending upon temperature change. <P>SOLUTION: The antiferroelectric liquid crystal element is arranged having one transmission axis set in an average major-axis direction of antiferroelectric liquid crystal molecules in a first stable state, and placed in the cutoff state when a drive voltage having a first polarity is applied and in the transmission state when a drive voltage having a second polarity is applied. Drive means controls the drive voltages so that the sum of an integrated value of a Ton time and the drive voltage having the second polarity and an integrated value of a Toff time and the drive voltage having the first polarity is substantially 0. The transmission state and cutoff state are entered by applying the drive voltages having the different polarities, so the cutoff state is quickly entered by applying the drive voltage having the high reverse polarity without the need to take a rebound of transmissivity into consideration. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
