855,681. Purifying water. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. March 8, 1957 [March 8, 1956], No. 7320/56. Class 46. [Also in Groups XXXV and XL(b)] A method of controlling a process for the removal of salts from water by passing it through cation exchange material 2 charged with hydrogen ions and then through anion exchange material 3 of such strong viscosity as to remove not only the mineral acids but also disolved carbon dioxide and silicon comprises continuously bleeding a sample of the effluent from the exchange material in line 5, atomizing it with air at 10 and an inflammable gas at 8 and burning it before a photo-voltaic cell 18 of a flame photometer, the signals from which are used to control the process. Signals from the cell 18 energize a mirror galvonometer 19 which reflects light on to a photo-multiplier 20 which actuates a recorder 22 and, by means of a relay 23, can alarm 24. Alternatively the relay 23 initiates regeneration of the ion exchange material. |
