An automobile door latch comprises a toothed bolt wheel 4, a detent lever 5 which prevents rotation of the bolt wheel by engaging the teeth on it or on a separate ratchet wheel and a compression spring 32 lodged between the detent lever 5 and a lever 7 which is rockable by a push-button to rock the detent lever itself. As shown, the latch mechanism is mounted on a frame consisting of two plates 1, 2 approximately at right angles to each other, the plate 2 being mounted parallel to the inside surface of a door. The toothed wheel 4 is rotatably mounted on the inside of the plate 1 on a spindle 3 which carries on the outside of the plate 1 a toothed bolt (not shown). The detent lever 5 mounted on a pivot Band engageable at one end 6 with the wheel 4, engages at its other end 13 with a surface 12 on a link 9 which transmits to the detent lever 5, rocking movement of the push-button operated lever 7 mounted on a pivot A and by which the detent lever 5 may be freed from the wheel 4 against the spring 32. The arrangement is such that the angle subtended by the pivots A and B at the spindle C is less than 20 degrees. The inner end 10 of the lever 7 engages the link 9 through a hole 11 therein, and an end 17 of a lever 14 mounted on a pivot 14a is engageable with the end 10 of the lever 7 to permit the link 9 to be moved to free the lever 5 by an inside handle connected to the other end of the lever 14. A trip lever 18 mounted on a pivot 19 includes a flange 20 having a slot 21 for the passage of the end 22 of the link 9, the arrangement being such that clockwise movement of the lever 18 from the unlocked position shown, rocks the link 9 about the connections 10, 11 sufficiently to disengage the surface 12 from the end 13 of lever 5 thus rendering the push-button inoperative. The lever 18 is movable by a sill button or key-operated lock connected to a locking lever 24, 25 mounted on a pivot 26 and engaged in a slot 18a in the lever 18. The lever 18 is retained in either of two positions by an over-centre spring 31. A spring loaded lever 28 mounted on a pivot 27 returns the mechanism to the unlocked condition if the door is slammed, with the mechanism in locked condition, but without the push-button being depressed. |
