<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fumaric acid diester resin which has excellent optical properties such as a high out-of-plane phase difference even in a thin film and reduced wavelength dependency and is suitable for a retardation film, and a retardation film. <P>SOLUTION: The fumaric acid diester resin comprises: a fumaric acid diisopropyl residue unit; and a fumaric acid di-tert-butyl residue unit.
