In a two-stroke loop scavenged I.C. engine with exhaust and scavenging ports disposed substantially perpendicular to the cylinder axis, main scavenging ports are disposed adjacent to, and at each side of, the exhaust ports with their top edges situated approximately level with the bottom edges of the exhaust ports, and auxiliary scavenging ports of a total cross-sectional area less than that of the main scavenging ports are disposed beneath the exhaust ports. The exhaust ports 3, Figs. 1 and 6 are symmetrically arranged with their axes directed towards the cylinder axis and subtend an angle at the latter of about 90 to 130 degrees. The axes of the main scavenging ports 4, Fig. 3, intersect the plane of symmetry of the scavenging port arrangement in the region of the wall of the cylinder liner, in this case between the inner and outer boundaries of the liner. The axes of the auxiliary scavenging ports 5 intersect inside the cylinder. The axes of the scavenging ports 4 and 5 may have a slight upward inclination of 10 degrees maximum with respect to a plane perpendicular to the cylinder axis. The piston head is chamfered at its periphery to an angle a, Fig. 7, of about 10 degrees to 15 degrees which in conjunction with the exhaust ports has the effect of deflecting the emerging gas stream into the exhaust duct 6, Fig. 1, which slopes gently upwards and is provided with a rotary valve (not shown) if the engine is supercharged. In conjunction with the scavenging ports the piston chamfer results in a slight upward inclination of the incoming stream of scavenging air. The diameter d, Fig. 7, is approximately 0À75D.</p>
