Compositions, which have use in selective oxidation or reduction, comprise a compound capable of existing in a quinone or an hydroquinone form, in association with a porous solid used in a non-fabric form. In Example 1, tetrachloro-1,4-hydroquinone and cellulose pulp are ground together to form an intimate mixture. This material is washed with water, normal hydrochloric acid, stannous chloride solution, and again with normal hydrochloric acid. The composition will reduce ferric ammonium sulphate solution to the ferrous state. The material may be regenerated by treatment with stannous chloride solution. Example 3 describes the preparation of a composition by refluxing a solution of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone in chloroform, mixed with cellulose pulp. In Example 7, the composition is made from the sodium derivative of polyvinyl alcohol and tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone. Other substrates which are specified are:- kaolin, alumina, kieselguhr, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, talc, barium sulphate, silica gel, charcoal, and starch. Example 2 mentions the reduction of silver nitrate.ALSO:Compositions, having a redox function, comprise a compound capable of existing in both a quinone and a hydroquinone form, in association with a porous solid used in a non-fabric form. The compositions may be used for selective oxidation or reduction, e.g. for continuous-flow oxidation or reduction of organic compounds in solution. The compositions may also be used as anti-oxidants, for removal of oxygen from water and aqueous solutions, and as control-agents in the technology of vinyl compounds. In Example 4, the composition is made from soda-cellulose and tetrachloroquinone. In Example 7, the composition is made from the sodium derivative of polyvinyl alcohol and tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone. |
