686,359. Steering mechanism. PORSCHE KONSTRUKTIONEN GES. May 2, 1951 [June 19, 1950], No. 10320/51. Class 80 (i). In a screw-and-nut steering mechanism the steering spindle 1 has intersecting right and left hand threads engaged respectively by nut segments 7, 7<SP>1</SP> , which are movably mounted in spherical recesses in levers 8, 9 secured to shafts formed with levers 12, 13 which are thus rotated in opposite directions and are directly linked to the two road wheels. Plate springs 19, 20 press the nut segments against the spindle 1 which has bearings at each end thereof. In a modification the spindle has a bearing only at its upper end and is free to rock as the nuts traverse their respective threads. In this modification the nut segments are carried by resilient levers secured to shafts one of which is hollow and surrounds the other so that both shafts project at the same side of the spindle. |
