A belt - like device which is adapted to be passed successively through two chambers and thereby to transfer heat between fluids flowing in these chambers, comprises at least one layer of interconnected wire coils 1a-1d, each extending transversely of the belt, and transverse plates 5 extending at intervals across the belt and serving to impede the flow of fluid through apertures provided in the chamber walls for the passage of the belt. In the form shown, the coils 1 and plates 5 are interconnected to form the belt by means of pins 6 of circular or rectangular cross-section. Other layers of coils may be provided above and below the intermediate layer 1. In Fig. 1, these additional layers are similar to the layer 1 but the pins 6 are omitted between adjacent plates 5 to provide flexibility of the belt. In Fig. 3 the additional layers consist of coils 15, 25 extending in the length of the belt and are secured to the plates 5 by engagement with tongues or hooks 16 formed in or provided on the plates.
