A gas/liquid contact column in which the gas and liquid flows are in countercurrent, comprises a casing and a plurality of vertically spaced trays 10 therein, portions 11 of adjacent trays being cut away at opposite sides to provide a tortuous fluid path through the column, each tray 10 comprising a flat, imperforate plate having a plurality of downwardly depending fins 15 in planes parallel to the liquid flow and contacting the tray next below, and having a plurality of downwardly depending parallel vapour baffles 17 transverse to the direction of gas flow and of such depth as to permit gas and liquid flow over the upper surface of the tray below. The trays may be aluminium or copper, and the fins and baffles may be integral therewith or brazed or welded thereto. Each tray preferably has an upstanding weir 14 at the liquid inlet side, and may have a similar weir at its liquid outlet side adjacent the cut-away portion 11. Notches 16 may be cut in the fins 15 and the baffles 17 may be solid or of expanded metal, or may comprise lines of studs.
