A semiconductor light-emitting device (90) includes: a semiconductor light-emitting element (1) that includes a conductive supporting substrate (10) joined to a p-type semiconductor layer side (43) of a semiconductor laminate (40), and the semiconductor laminate (40) having the p-type semiconductor layer (43), an active layer (42), and an n-type semiconductor layer (41) laminated in that order; a translucent sealing resin (92) that covers the semiconductor laminate (40); and phosphor particles (93) contained in the translucent sealing resin (92). The semiconductor laminate (40) is characterized by: being separated into at least two semiconductor blocks (45a-45d) by a groove (2) that penetrates the p-type semiconductor layer (43), the active layer (42), and the n-type semiconductor layer (41); and the width (W) of the groove (2) being less than the average diameter of the phosphor particles (93).
