PURPOSE: A character input apparatus and a method thereof are provided to increase convenience of a user by easily selecting a main key and a sub key to which a desired character is allocated. CONSTITUTION: A touch screen(130) displays a main keypad consists of main keys in a character input mode. A controlling unit(150) inputs a character which is allocated to the main key and displays a sub keypad in a peripheral area of the main key. The sub keypad includes sub keys. The controlling unit inputs one or more characters if a drag operation is sensed.
