The method involves comparing a test variable bit by bit with a reference variable, where digitized values of a period of a signal received by a receiver are stored in the test variable. The test and reference variables are progressively shifted relative to each other, and a respective correlation value is determined. Maximum of the correlation value is determined (4) from the determined correlation values. A statement about transmission and/or validity of the signal is produced with reference to the maximum of the correlation value. An independent claim is also included for a device for checking correct transmission and/or validity of a periodic analog signal transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver, comprising an evaluation unit.
