The method involves regulating a deadband (40) by a reference variable i.e. internal resistance (Ri) of exhaust gas sensor, to manage a heater of the sensor. A preliminary order is applied based on an operating point in addition to regulation of the deadband, where a lower threshold limit (21) of the deadband is between the internal resistance for a new exhaust gas sensor, which is still overheated, and the normal internal resistance of the new sensor and a higher threshold limit (22) of the deadband is between the internal resistance of the sensor and the internal resistance of new sensor. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for managing active heating of a heater of an exhaust gas sensor for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle (2) a computer program product for managing active heating of a heater of an exhaust gas sensor for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle.
