A chuck apparatus with jaws for gripping drill rods, each jaw being moved radially by the transfer of the axial movement of a surrounding cylinder by links that pivot both in the jaws and in connections to the cylinder. In operation while the chuck is closing as the links move through different angles. The jaws at first move a lot with little force, and then when they begin to grip they are at angle so there is less travel but more mechanical advantage for more grip force. The mechanism transfers the movement and force of the cylinder in an efficient way. As a result the chuck has more clearance for freeing the drill rod, and more force available to grip the drill rod. Also the chuck has the ability to grip different sizes of drill rod without having to change the jaw set.
