A method for operating a washing machine is provided to improve the initial operation efficiency of a BLDC motor by outputting a current of the motor corresponding to the position of a rotor to operate the motor. A washing machine includes a housing, a fixing tub, a washing tub, and a drive motor. A BLDC motor is used as the drive motor. In the BLDC motor, an AC power source supplied from an AC power source unit receives a power source converted to a three phase AC power source by a power conversion unit including a converter(101), a capacitor(102), and an inverter(103). When the BLDC motor is initially operated, the position of a rotor is assumed from the rotational inertia of the washing tub and a motor torque command value. The BLDC motor is operated on the basis of the position of the rotor.
