Acrylonitrile or a mixture of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile is produced by heating a stream of vaporized propionitrile or isobutyronitrile respectively in a reaction chamber at a space velocity of from 1500 to 7000 and a linear velocity of from 75 to 400 feet per second at a temperature from 550 DEG to 750 DEG C. Space velocity is defined as the volume of gas per hour divided by reactor volume. The reaction vessel is preferably tubular and not packed. The reactor can be packed with inert refractory materials if desired.ALSO:Hydrogen cyanide is obtained as a by-product when propionitrile or isobutyronitrile is heated in a reaction chamber at a space velocity of from 1500 to 7000 and a linear velocity of from 75 to 400 feet per second at a temperature from 550 DEG to 750 DEG C.
