An apparatus for generating an internal voltage is provided to supply the internal voltage to a semiconductor memory stably by decreasing the level of the internal voltage when the level of the internal voltage increases above an allowed voltage. A voltage generation unit(100) outputs an internal voltage in response to the comparison result according to the current variation corresponding to a reference voltage and a divided voltage of the internal voltage. A voltage drop unit(200) decreases the internal voltage when the internal voltage is higher than a specific level. The voltage drop unit includes a driving part and a level down part. The driving part outputs a level down driving signal in response to the divided voltage, and the level down part decreases the level of the internal voltage in response to the level down driving signal.
