<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact mercury-free high intensity discharge (HID) lamp suitable for automotive headlamp application. <P>SOLUTION: A mercury-free high intensity discharge (HID) lamp has a pair of counter electrodes sealed in a transparent enclosure defining an arc chamber and arranged to be spaced with each other. An outer transparent envelope has first and second textured light scattering stripes on an inner surface on substantially opposite sides thereof, and the light scattering stripes extend continuously from one electrode to the other electrode. The stripes widen the cross-sectional luminance distribution of an arc discharge image and make the arc image straighter while keeping light scattering losses at minimum, so that a reduced arc peak luminance is still at a desired level. In other versions, a plurality of textured light scattering stripes smaller in width are used to replace a single light scattering stripe larger in width. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
