The breakwater (1) has a box (2) formed for floating on water, and a securing unit (3) for allowing the box to vertically move under effect of waves when the box is in water. A ballasting unit (4) mounted at a distance of 1 to 3 times the depth of the box has a surface facing a lower surface of the box. The ballasting unit moves a part of volume of water between the lower surface of the box and the surface of the ballasting unit when the box is in water and vertically moved. The surface of the ballasting unit is arranged below or equal to the lower surface of the box. An independent claim is also included for a method for ballasting using displacement of a floating breakwater.
