An automatic levelling device for a hydropneumatic suspension system comprises a reservoir 1 supplying fluid to a pump (Fig. 1, not shown) feeding a distributer 5 built into the reservoir 1 and containing a valve 27 (Fig. 3) which delivers fluid through an outlet 33 to a suspension cylinder supporting a suspension arm carrying a road-wheel or permits return of fluid from the suspension cylinder to the reservoir 1 depending on the pressure prevailing in the suspension cylinder. The reservoir 1 comprises a cylindrical body connected to the distributer 5 and contains a piston 14 urged downwardly by a spring 15 and connected by an invaginated diaphragm 12 to the wall of the reservoir to define a variable-capacity chamber 24. A sealed flexible bellows 18 secured to the piston 14 carries a closing plate engaging a bell crank 21 co-operating with a rod 22 carrying the valve 27. Fluid is supplied from the chamber 24 to the pump and is fed under pressure to the distributer 5 through an inlet 34. If high pressure exists in the suspension cylinders due to increased loading a piston 28 on the rod 22 urges the valve 27 to its closed position against the force exerted by the bellows 18 through the bell crank 21 and fluid is delivered to the cylinder via a non-return valve 35 and the outlet 33. If, on the other hand, pressure is low in the suspension cylinder due to reduced load the bellows 18 acts on the rod 22 through the bell crank 21 to move the valve 27 to the right so that fluid flows from the suspension cylinder through grooves 37 in the piston 28 to the chamber 24, and the fluid delivered by the pump to the inlet 34 is returned to the chamber 24. |
