A sealed cell is provided with a rupturable seal comprising an annular plastics gasket 30 positioned between the central terminal 34 and a vented cover 32 and also between the cover 32 and the cell container 12, a yieldable annular metal back-up washer 38 in contact with the gasket, and a bowed annular metal washer 42 having a plurality of radially inwardly directed teeth 44 in contact with the undersurface of the washer 38. On rise in pressure gasket 30 is deflected longitudinally outwardly displacing back-up washer 38 so that the teeth 44 slide on the washer 38 and then pierce a vertical wall 54 of the gasket. A false cover 45 is provided to prevent escape of electrolyte on venting. The cell comprises a metal container 12, with an insulating jacket 14 enclosing a gelled anode 16, a gelled electrolyte 17, a cathode 18 and separator 20.</p> |
