Disclosed is a method for diagnosing, monitoring and/or prognosing the metastatic behaviour of cancer regarding the occurrence of distant metastasis in a patient comprising determining the level of expression of TPTE and CXCR4. The level of expression of TPTE and a level of expression of CXCR4 is increased compared to the level of expression in a subject without metastasis of cancer or without a risk for metastasis of cancer is indicative for a metastatic behaviour of cancer regarding the occurrence of distant metastasis or for a potential for a metastatic behaviour of cancer regarding the occurrence of distant metastasis.
