<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable rapid and accurate recognition of a hand gesture based on time-series information of plural hand shapes. <P>SOLUTION: A face image detection unit 22 detects a face image from an input image. A posture estimation unit 23 estimates the posture of a person from the position of the face image. A hand position detection unit 25 detects the position of a hand of the person based on the estimated posture. A hand image extraction unit 26 extracts a hand image of the person from the input image based on information on the detected position of the hand of the person. A hand shape specification unit 27 specifies a hand shape of the person based on the hand image. A hand shape time-series storage unit 28 stores the specified hand shape in time series in association with the information on the hand position. A hand gesture recognition unit 29 recognizes a hand gesture based on information on hand shapes stored in time series in association with stored information on hand positions.
