<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an octacyano metal complex capable of developing new physical property which has not existed before, and to provide a method of producing the complex. <P>SOLUTION: The octacyano metal complex comprises Co<SB POS="POST">3</SB>[W(CN)<SB POS="POST">8</SB>]<SB POS="POST">2</SB>(pyrimidine)<SB POS="POST">2</SB>(4-methylpyridine)<SB POS="POST">2</SB>.6H<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O, and the metal complex performs transition of phases from a paramagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state by irradiation with light, has a coercive force Hc up to 2.3 T in the ferromagnetic state, and develops further higher coercive force Hc than coercive force Hc of 1.2 T possessed by the conventional octacyano metal complex comprising Co<SB POS="POST">3</SB>[W(CN)<SB POS="POST">8</SB>]<SB POS="POST">2</SB>(pyrimidine)<SB POS="POST">4</SB>.6H<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O.
