The invention relates to coating compositions based on organic solvents and containing at least one hydroxyl-containing compound (A) and at least one crosslinker (B) having groups which are reactive toward hydroxyl groups and at least one matting agent (M) based on silica gel, characterized in that (i) the matting agent (M) has been surface-modified by means of one or more waxes and (ii) the coating composition additionally contains at least one rheological auxiliary (R) based on hydrophobic silica. The present invention also provides multistage coating processes using this coating composition and provides for the use of the coating composition as clear varnish or use of the coating process for automobile series surface coatings, the surface coating of exterior automobile parts and automobile repair surface coating.
