An engine includes a main water-filled chamber 11, and a spherical buoy able to roll within the chamber. The buoy rolls along an air chute 14 to enter a lower side of the main chamber via a transfer chamber 17 where the sphere acts on a rotary drive 12, 13 as it passes through the main water-filled chamber by buoyancy force. Water needs to be continually supplied (e.g. from a river or tidal lock) to enter the main chamber 11 and is subsequently expelled via a sump from the transfer chamber. The transfer chamber may be spherical and have quarter spherical (eyelid) gates.
