A ruminant feed comprises an admixture of an edible starch-bearing material, such as cereal grain, hay, silage, sorghum grain, wheat, corn, or vegetable starch, and a non-protein nitrogenous substance hydrolysable to ammonia by rumen bacteria, at least a part of said material having been at least partially gelatinised in the presence of sufficient water to effect such gelatinisation for example by heating, preferably to at least 212‹F., after admixture of said material and said substance. The nitrogenous substance may be urea or an ammonium salt, such as the phosphate, acetate, bicarbonate, citrate, lactate, or sulphate. The admixture may contain at least 20% water prior to gelatinisation. The product may be employed in the form of extruded pellets or cubes, and may contain taste-enhancing agents, such as molasses, edible fat, sucrose, protein hydrolysates, soybean foots, and soybean lethicin. |
