In a pressure relief valve for excess steam pressure from a hot water boiler or heating unit, which is admitted at inlet 3, a seal is effected by mercury 6 between a housing 4 and a weighted cone 1 or stepped cylindrical member (Fig. 2, not shown) which, in the closed position, is prevented from abutment with the housing by a raised part 12 of supply chamber 2. A rise in pressure forces mercury up between cone 1 and housing 4 and raises the enlarged head 7 of cone 1 within housing portion 8 to permit excess pressure to escape at outlet 9. The valve may be provided with cyclone filters at the inlet and outlet to separate impurities and mercury and should preferably have a corrosion resistant coating for the various elements making up the valve.</p> |
