PURPOSE: A composition containing mandelic acid is provided to selectively suppress growth of pathogenic bacteria and to prevent or treat food poisoning. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating food poisoning contains mandelic acid as an active ingredient. The composition has antibacterial ability against pathogenic bacteria causing food poisoning. The pathogenic bacteria include Bacillus cereus, E. coli O-157:H7, Salmonella gallinarum, Salmonella enteritidis, Shigella sonnei, Yersinia enterocolitica, Listeria monocytogenes, or Staphylicoccus aureus. A functional food for preventing or treating food poisoning contains mandelic acid as an active ingredient.
