Emergency brake system for machine tools, machine tool therewith and method for operating such a machine tool

The system (10) has a diagnostic system with a memory for checking functionality of a blocking element of a locking device. A brake drum (12) and a brake shoe (18) are engaged with each other to brake a revolving shaft (16) when the locking device is released. The locking device comprises an electromagnetic actuator to switch the locking device from a locked position to an unlocked position. The diagnostic system provides a diagnostic current, which acts on the electromagnetic actuator of the locking device. An independent claim is also included for a method for providing emergency braking for a machine tool.
