A fastening device for a cord (the term also including a lace or string) comprises a casing 10 having a passage 13 for two cord parts 23 to be clamped, a clamping roller 21 for the cord parts movable longitudinally in the passage, -the passage being shaped so that by tension in the cord parts in one direction of the passage, the parts are clamped by the roller to each of two opposite passage walls, and being defined by two spaced apart narrow side wall surfaces and two space apart wider side wall surfaces 14 connected by and to said narrower surfaces, the narrow surfaces being closer together at one end of the passage and substantially further apart at the other end of the passage and the wider surfaces being correspondingly narrower at the one end and wider at the other end, one of the wider walls having a closed end slot (not shown) extending longitudinally substantially midway between the narrow surfaces, the roller having an axial pin 22 extending through the slot and adapted for manipulation to displace the roller from a cord clamping position wherein it thrusts towards the closer together portions of the narrower surfaces, the wall containing the slot being resiliently deformable normal to its plane in longitudinal alignment with the slot and to an extent, having regard to the length of the pin, to enable flexing displacement thereof to pass the pin into the slot during insertion and assembly of the roller from the adjacent end of the passage into operative relation within the passage. In the construction shown the roller is toothed to increase its grip on the cord parts. The inside of the wall of the casing having the slot has a groove which extends from the slot to the adjacent end of the casing to enable the roller to be inserted into the casing. The passage has three sections, an intermediate section 13' in which the opposite narrow wall surfaces are parallel to each other, an end section 17 extending from the intermediate section in which the narrow wall surfaces converge towards each other and an end section 18 extending from the opposite end of the intermediate section in which the narow wall surfaces diverge from each other. In use the cord parts are gripped between the converging wall surfaces but when the roller is moved so that the clamping pressure is reduced the roller applies light pressure to the cord parts which are held between the roller and the parallel surfaces of the intermediate section hence there is always a certain amount of friction between the cord parts, the roller and the casing so that tension in the cord parts in one direction moves the roller to the clamping position. In a modification the end section 18 is omitted. In this modification the converging wall surfaces can be toothed to increase the grip on the cord parts. A modification is also described in which the converging parts of the narrow walls of the casing terminate before the broad walls so that slots are provided in which the cord parts are disposed to hold the fastening device against the article whose cord is being fastened. The device is intended for use with anoraks, life jackets, ruck sacks and shopping bags. |
