A gas discharge device comprises a display and memory panel including a crossed array of external conductors 12, 13 on dielectric members 14, 16 enclosing an ionizable gas, means 29 for supplying a periodic alternating sustaining voltage to the conductors means 60 for producing unidirectional pulses of relatively short duration compared to the sustaining voltage cycle, and an addressing circuit 61 acting to add a first of the unidirectional pulses to the sustaining voltage to ignite a discharge and to add a subsequent pulse to stop the discharge. On ignition wall charges collect on dielectric surfaces 17, 18 and produce a field opposed to the applied sustain voltage V s . Write or erase D.C. pulses are supplied to selected conductor pairs to actuate desired gas cells of the panel; these pulses are superposed on the sustain voltage. The erase effects are obtained by suitably modifying the wall charge by modifying in turn the slope of the net applied voltage waveform. As described, addressor 61 operates through pulse generators 60-12 and 60-13, each comprising a transistor switch (Q 2 ) in series with the diode-shunted primary of a transformer (T 1 ) whose secondary (42) supplies the required high voltage actuating pulses, Fig. 2 (not shown). Three modes of modifying the waveform to extinguish a "cell" are disclosed, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). |
