To determine the dissolved hydrogen in a fluid (e.g. cooling water of a nuclear reactor) it is reacted with excess oxygen, and the amount of oxygen before and after the reaction is measured. As shown the fluid mixed with oxygen is passed through a reactor column 1 containing a catalyst e.g. platinum or palladium on an alumina support. Columns 4 and 6 connected to the inlet and outlet of the reactor column 1, contain a reagent such as thallium which is converted to thallous hydroxide and varies the conductivity of the fluid according to the amount of oxygen present. The outlets of these columns pass through conductivity cells 8, 9 connected in a differential circuit to indicate the amount of oxygen used. Flowmeters and regulators 12.. 16 are provided in the outlet pipes from all columns.
