1,252,517. Isocyanates. OLIN CORP. 18 Aug., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 41163/69. Heading C2C. Organic isocyanates are prepared by the catalytic reaction of an organic nitro compound and carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an effective amount of discrete particles of an oxide of iron, preferably ferric oxide. An oxide of molybdenum and/or chromium may also be present. The catalyst is preferably a noble metal compound such as a halide, optionally complexed with or mixed with a Lewis base, preferably pyridine, quinoline or isoquinoline. The preparation of toluylene diisocyanate is described. Starting materials include nitro -alkanes, -cycloalkanes, -naphthalene, - anthracenes, - phenothiazines, - alkyl benzenes, - alkoxy benzenes, - halobenzenes, - biphenyls, - biphenyl ether, biphenylthioethers, - bisphenylsulphones, - benzene sulphonyl chlorides, benzaldehydes, - benzoates, - benzonitriles, - benzoyl chlorides and - phthalic anhydride. |
