In an automatic firearm in which the breech is unlocked by a member actuated by a recoiling part 6 of the firearm, a primary cylinder 33 in which is disposed a primary piston 34 connected mechanically, 34b, 28, to the recoiling part, communicates with a secondary cylinder 35 in which is disposed a secondary piston 36 actuating the member 23, 22 operating the breech block 2, the cylinders being filled with liquid between the pistons, the effective cross-section of the primary piston being greater than that of the secondary piston to impose on the latter a speed greater than that of the recoiling part, a communicating passage 44 being provided between the two sides of the primary piston, the passage being capable of being blocked off at an adjustable point of the stroke of that piston to permit adjustment of the point at which the speed augmentation, and hence firing rate, occurs. The cylinder 33 is provided with two sets of helical passages 44 and 45 (Figs. 2a and 5) while the primary piston 34 has helical lands 46. The passage group 44 is initially open for a rearward movement "a" of the piston 34 and is subsequently closed for a further movement of "b" + "c", the passage group 45 then re-establishing the communication across the piston. The primary piston is rotatable by a hand lever 49 to vary the distance "a", the effective stroke "b" + "c" remaining constant. Action.-On firing, the barrel 7 and part 6 recoils, driving piston rearwards. Fluid pressure between the pistons moves the smaller piston 36 rearwards at a higher speed carrying with it the unlocking push-piece 23, its projection 22 abutting face 21a of the slidable casing 9. As the latter moves rearward skews 19 engage rollers on a pin 11 carried by breech block 2 to rotate the latter from engagement with locking lugs 5 before opening the breech. After cartridge ejection a spring and a damper device return the breech mechanism, an inclined surface 26 then actuating member 27 to disengage leaf-spring 24 and allow casing 9 to move forward relatively to the block 2 to rotate and lock the latter. The primary piston is provided with passages 54 co-operating with a disc 55 to act as a oneway valve allowing fluid to return to the righthand side of the piston when the weapon recuperates.</p> |
