In the manufacture of amines by the catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding nitro compounds, the nitro compound is atomized into a stream of hydrogen circulating in a closed circuit and is then catalytically hydrogenated in the vapour phase, the circuit including a contact reactor, a condenser and a heat-exchanger. An example is given of the conversion of nitrobenzene to aniline with the aid of a copper catalyst on pumice. Apparatus is described. |
