PURPOSE: A composition containing crude saponin fraction derived from Platycodon grandiflorum extract is provided to promote differentiation of osteroblast and to treat bone diseases. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains crude saponin fraction derived from Platycodon grandiflorum as an active ingredient. The crude saponin fraction is prepared by adsorbing hot water extract of Platycodon grandiflorum onto an ion exchange resin column, removing saccharides using water, eluting adsorbed organic materials using methanol. A functional health food for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains the crude saponin fraction as an active ingredient. The functional health food is manufactured in the form of a drink, sausage, bread, candy, snack, noodle, and ice cream.
