Coated iron oxide particle, which is needle-shaped, comprises a core comprising maghemite and magnetite, and a coating comprising metal oxide or metalloid oxide. An independent claim is also included for producing the coated iron oxide particle, comprising (a) reacting a needle shaped feroxyhite particle and optionally coating material particle-containing aerosol in a high temperature zone in a reducing gas atmosphere, and subsequently contacting the obtained substance mixture with an amount of an oxygen-containing gas (C), preferably air, which is sufficient to oxidize the substance mixture completely, (b) optionally adding at least one coating material-starting compound (D) at one point outside the high temperature zone, and (c) cooling the mixture and separating the solid.
