Adhesive anaerobic compositions suitable for bonding metal surfaces comprise an acrylate ester monomer, a hydroperoxide catalyst or a perester which can be hydrolysed in situ to a hydroperoxide and, as adhesive component, a polyester resin which is soluble in said monomer and has a molecular weight of 2,000 to 40,000. Suitable monomers include di- or higher-esters of acrylic, methacrylic or chloroacrylic acid with mono- and poly-glycols, diglycerol and trimethylolpropane. Preferred catalysts are the hydroperoxides described in Specification 824,677, e.g. cumene hydroperoxide; a perester such as t-butyl perbenzoate may be used instead. The polyester resin may be a polymaleate or -fumarate thermosetting resin, acrylate ester copolymer (e.g. styrene-ethyl acrylate copolymer), alkyd resin, polyester of "Nadic" (Registered Trade Mark) anhydride or polyacetal compound containing acetate groups. The composition may also contain a copolymerizable monomer, e.g. crotonic, itaconic, Nadic, methyl-Nadic, acrylic, methacrylic and maleic acids or anhydrides, betacyanoethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, beta-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, di - t - butylaminoethyl acrylate and mixtures thereof. Other optional components include benzoquinone and accelerators such as imides, sulphimides (e.g. benzoic sulphmide), amines (e.g. 3-aminopropanol and triethyl amine) and heavy metal compounds (e.g. FeCl3 and Co, Mn, Pb, Cu and Fe soaps). |
