An apparatus is provided comprising a security system 10 having at least one sensor 14,16. A detected state of the at least one sensor 14,16 is coupled to a web server 30; the web server 30 publishes the detected state; and a remotely located user 36,40 subscribes to receive the detected state of the at least one sensor 14,16 via the publication by the web server 30. The web server 30 may operates under a REST format. The publishing of the detected state may occur under a RSS format, wherein the RSS feed is an XML structure. In a further aspect, at least one http document 32,34 containing a state of the at least one sensor 14,16 is published by the web server 30 in response to a change in the state of the sensor 14,16; and a remotely located user 36,40 receives the detected state of the at least one sensor 14,16 via publication by the web server 30. The sensor may detect entry into a secured area. The security system may execute commands from a remotely located user.
