PURPOSE: A fault diagnosis apparatus and method of a power conversion device are provided to diagnose and distinguish the malfunctions of a semiconductor switching device through a three-phase current measurement of the power conversion device. CONSTITUTION: A fault diagnosis apparatus comprises a power conversion device(9) and a fault diagnosis controller(14). The power conversion device comprises a generator(2), an input three phase reactance input(3), a converter(4), and an inverter(5). The generator produces three phase AC power of variable frequencies from the rotation of a blade(1). The input three phase reactance inputs the three phase AC power developed in the generator. The converter changes the AC power to DC power. The inverter changes the DC power into a three phase AC power of fixed frequency. The fault diagnosis controller comprises a coordinate converter(10). The coordinate converter changes a three-phase current flowing into the converter and inverter into a two dimensional current.
