A tachometer or other indicating instrument with a translucent dial plate has a light source 26, for illuminating the dial from the rear and opaque indicia 50 in front of the translucent dial, the indicia 50 having contrasting portions 52, 54 so that they can be seen even when the intensity of illumination from ambient sources balances that from the rear source 26. The dial 38 comprises a transparent plate 40 (which may be of acrylic or polycarbonate plastics material) with a layer of translucent material 44 (which may be white, silver or light blue paint) leaving an annular area 46 clear for edge lighting by reflection at the bevelled edge 42. The indicia 50 are carried by a front layer 48 of dark coloured plastics film capable of absorbing ambient light when the source 26 is unenergized and of transmitting light from the source 26 when it is energized. The layer 48 may be a transparent plastics film with a surface made light transfusing by applying a vapourized lacquer finish. Each of the indicia 50 comprises an opaque dark coloured substratum 52 and a superimposed opaque light coloured stratum 54, both of which may be formed of ink or paint and which are preferably black and white respectively. |
