The invention comprises the preparation of D-lysergic acid amides of the Formula I wherein m is 1 to 4, n is 0 to 3, X is H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, thioalkyl, unsubstituted or hydroxy substituted aralkyl, indolyl or imidazolyl, and R is H or C 1-3 alkyl, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, and the novel compounds of the above Formula I in which m is 1 to 4, n is 0, 1 or 2, X is thioalkyl, unsubstituted or hydroxy substituted aralkyl, indolyl or imidazolyl and R is H or CH 3 . The compounds of Formula I are prepared by reducing with alkaline earth metal borohydrides lysergic acid amides of the Formula II wherein X, m, n are R are as defined above except X may be alkoxycarbonyl and R1 is alkyl, which are made by reacting the corresponding lysergic acid chloride hydrochlorides with aminoacid esters of the formula D.Lysergic acid chloride hydrochloride and 1 - methyl - D - lysergic acid chloride hydrochloride are obtained by reacting the corresponding acids with phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus pentachloride. 1 - Methyl - D - lysergic acid is made by methylating D-lysergic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions, having an antiserotonin effect, contain lysergic acid dreivatives of Formula (I) above and pharmaceutical carriers.
