Spaced dyeing of polyester or polyamide fibres is effected by injecting a disperse dyestuff and/or an organic pigment dyestuff dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent into the fibres whilst wound on a bobbin supported on heated transporting equipment at a temperature of between 160‹C and 230‹C. The dye is subsequently fixed by allowing the bobbin to remain at this temperature for between 15 and 180 seconds. The transporting means may be a conveyor belt 4 provided with bobbin supports 3 which passes through a heated chamber 5 (heated by, e.g. infra-red heaters, high frequency driers or hot air or steam) the conveyor belt being halted each time a bobbin 2 is at the injecting means 1, so that the injection of the dye under pressure can be performed at one or more parts of the wound package. Each injecting mechanism includes a hollow injection needle with a perforated shaft for the injection of the hot dye under pressure, the length of which approximately corresponds to the thickness of the winding, it being such that it can penetrate to any desired depth in the winding. The intermittent halting of the conveyor belt is by, e.g. a mechanical or optical contact operative to stop the motor driving the belt, the restarting being by a mechanical contact. Different coloured dyes may be used, and injected simultaneously or at separate locations. Solvents for the dyestuffs may be an oxalkylation product of an aliphatic, aromatic, alkylated aromatic or cycloaliphatic compound, or a polyglycol ether.
