<p>Apparatus for converting refuse into compost has a series of treatment chambers placed one above the other, the upper chamber having a filling orifice for the material to be treated and the lower chamber having a discharge orifice for treated material, the adjacent chambers being separated by floors with transfer orifices provided with devices for opening and closing the orifices for controlling the transfer of material from a chamber to a lower chamber. Each chamber has an agitator for agitating the material in the chamber, a device for introducing air into the chamber and passing it through the material, and a device for charging the atmosphere in the chamber, while at least the upper chambers are provided with a water feed. The apparatus also has a system for controlling the temp. of the material in the chambers and the CO2 content of the atmosphere in the chambers, and a device for controlling the rate of agitation and the supply of water and air to the upper chambers independently the other chambers. Used for converting refuse such as domestic sewage, into compost for use as a soil fertiliser. The rate of degradation of the compost can be closely controlled so that economic compost prodn is obtd.</p> |
